BAC Lightning F.6X S925/BA 11 Sqn. RAF
The awesome English Electric Lightning – the last all-British supersonic jet aircraft. Lightnings carried two different types of missile – the Firestreak and the Red Top. This aircraft has Red Tops attached to both sides, with a Firestreak on the floor. The Red Top was easily identifable from its rounded tip (the Firestreak has a very pointed nose). Although capable of travelling above Mach 3, the Red Top had a nasty habit of shearing off its fins if fired from a supersonic Lightning. Built by English Electric at Samlesbury (near Preston) in 1967. Displayed in 11 Sqn markings (the final operational Lightning squadron) | Rob Vogelaar
