Handley Page Halifax B.2 W1048/TL-S RAF
Halifax built by English Electric Ltd. at Samlesbury and in March 1942 assigned to No. 102 Squadron. On 9th April was transfered to No. 35 Squadron, in 23rd April flown to RAF Kinloss in prepared raid against German battleship Tirpitz which lay in Norwegian waters. On his first mission at night 27/28th April was hit by Tirpitz flak during attack and crash-landed on the frozen Lake Hoklingen 25 miles east of Trondheim. Six crewmen escaped safely, one captured, five later repatriated after reaching of neutral Sweden. In 1971 was wreck found and marked by local divers on the bottom of the lake. In 1973 was during “Operation Halifax” recovered and transported to UK. | Rob Vogelaar
